Roger O Thornhill. O stands for nothing, according to Roger, but it probably stands for zero, which is a place holder worth nothing. Roger is a place holder for the agent who doesn't exist himself.

Roger is a contemporary American who is having a little trouble living up the faces on Mt. Rushmore--the ones that dwarf this everyman.

Roger is also has women issues. He is caught be tween a drunken mother who infantilizes him and a duplicitous Eva Marie Saint who alternately seduces him and tries to have him killed. "How did a girl like you get to be a girl like you...up to no good?"

Only fools ask questions women like this.
