A remake of north by northwest ?

Have you ever heard of The Prize (1963) ? a movie from Mark Robson with Paul Newman.

Plot Summary : For some reason, this year's Nobel prize in literature has been awarded to the young author Andrew Craig, who seems to be more interested in women and drinking than writing. Another laureate is Dr. Max Stratman, the famous German-American physicist who comes to Stockholm with his young and beautiful niece Emily. The Foreign Department also gives him an assistant during his stay, Miss Andersson. Craig soon notices that Dr. Stratman is acting strangely. The second time they meet, Dr. Stratman does not even recognize him.

The movie share a lot of similarities with North by northwest in a such way that we can almost say it is a kind of remake.

  • Same Writer : Ernest Lehman (who also write North by northwest),
  • A hero (Paul Newman) enrolled in a course of events , witness of a murder and powerless to prevent it,
  • Bad guys who chased the good one (the daylight plane chase is replaced with a nightly truck chase on a bridge),
  • A blond,
  • inspirational soundtrack,,
  • Institutions : ONU / NOBEL PRIZE,
  • Same Acteur : Leo G caroll (picture)
See by yourself how the auction scene is transposed with a nudist convention !!

The movie is just released in DVD in september (Amazon USA)

An handwriting note from Ernest Lehman.

Ernest Lehman (1915-2005) is the writer of North by northwest.

Mini Biography : One of the most critically and commercially successful screenwriters in Hollywood history, Lehman grew up on Long Island, graduated from NY's City College. One of his first jobs was as a copywriter for a Broadway publicist. This experience would later be reflected in his novel and screenplay, "Sweet Smell of Success." He also worked as a radio comedy writer, and as editor of a financial magazine. He freelanced short stories for the likes of Collier's magazine and one of these fiction piece 'The Comedian' led to his first job in Hollywood as a screenwriter for Paramount in the mid 1950s. Nick Roddick, in Dictionary of Literary Biography, praised Lehman as "a champion of the well-crafted, what-happens-next screenplay." Served as president of the Writers Guild of America from 1983-85. (from IMDB)

The note (source) is about the plane chase scene and the crash in the oil tanker.

Even the greatest scenes begin with little notes !
